Why Can Select Pausing Deal Repeated Damage in Mega Man?

The shot can remain on screen while the enemy’s protection runs out during Select-pause.

Short answer

TASVideos documents that Mega Man’s Select-pause lets an enemy’s post-hit invulnerability expire while shots remain on screen. Unpausing can let the same shot hit again. The timing and overlap matter; Select is not simply a command to deal damage.

Scope: The original NES/Famicom Mega Man behavior described in TASVideos’ Rockman resources; later collection behavior is not established here.

The enemy’s blinking can finish during the pause

After a hit, the enemy blinks and temporarily rejects another hit. TASVideos notes that this blinking continues during Select-pause and the invulnerability period can run out. The shot has not necessarily left the screen when play resumes.

If that shot still overlaps the target, unpausing can produce another hit. The player has changed when damage can register without firing a new shot for each hit.

The documented sequence

The pause needs to occur while the shot can still make contact. If the attack is gone or no longer overlaps the enemy, ending the invulnerability period alone does not supply another hit.

  1. Land a shot on the enemy.
  2. Press Select while the shot remains in a position to overlap the target.
  3. Allow the enemy’s blinking invulnerability period to expire during the pause.
  4. Unpause; a shot still overlapping the enemy can register another hit.

Mega Man 2’s pause trick is a different interaction

The same resource separately describes Mega Man 2 pausing as stopping motion and resetting acceleration. That is not the explanation for repeated damage in the first game. Likewise, opening a weapon menu should not be substituted for the documented Select-pause input. This article follows the original behavior in the research guide, rather than promising the same result in every later release.
