Portrait of Ruin: How Skipping Death’s Speech Could Lock the Door
The boss was beaten. Leaving and walking back into his room could still stop the run.
Short answer
In affected Nintendo DS releases of Portrait of Ruin, quickly skipping Death’s post-fight dialogue, leaving left and returning can make the boss doors shut with no normal exit. The documented trigger is the skipped scene and return trip—not simply defeating Death. [1]
Scope: Original Nintendo DS game. The Castlevania Dungeon report says the European version removed this bug. No claim is made about every later collection or re-release.

You won the fight, then walked back in
Players normally expect a defeated boss room to become safe to cross. Here, the shortcut was outside the fight: press Start to skip the speech, leave, and come back. Pile of Secrets records that sequence; Castlevania Dungeon specifies the left exit. The doors can close again even though the fight is over. [1] [2]
That is what makes this bug irritating. It does not ask the player to clip through a wall or enter a strange code. Skipping dialogue and retracing a route are ordinary things to do after beating a boss.
A blocked route is not the same as a destroyed save
The reports describe a progression trap. They do not establish that the save file's data has become unreadable. Pile of Secrets even documents a recovery route for players who saved after triggering the problem, using another glitch involving suspension and map position. [2]
That does not make it a simple, universally safe repair. The route depends on precise positions and another glitch. For this history, the important distinction is that “the doors will not open” and “your save has been erased” describe different failures. The latter is not what these reports say.
The region changes the story
Castlevania Dungeon explicitly says the European release removed the issue. A player failing to reproduce it there is not necessarily doing the steps wrong. The version is part of the explanation.
For an affected original release, letting the post-fight scene finish avoids the documented skip trigger. We are not extending that advice to every later port without checking it. This is a small example of why an old bug story needs more than the game title: which release, which scene and which action all matter.
