Do you need to craft a new copy?

Not simply to change the components of an eligible crafted weapon. Shaping creates a new weapon from an unlocked Pattern. Reshaping lets you change an existing crafted copy. Bungie's guide describes both as parts of the crafting process at the Relic in the Enclave. [1]

The guide links weapon levels to additional component choices. Owning a random drop with the same name is not, by itself, proof that the copy can use the same crafting workflow. Inspect the actual item and available menu rather than assuming the name is sufficient.

What to check before spending materials

First decide whether you want another copy or a change to the one you have. Then inspect the relevant crafting option and its displayed requirements. Confirm the components you intend to select and the cost shown before committing. This article explains the distinction; it is not a current price list or a tier-by-tier guide.

That small pause prevents a common planning mistake: answering “Which perk do I want?” before answering “Am I creating a second weapon or modifying this one?” Those are different inventory decisions.

Our view: flexibility is useful, but not the same as convenience

Editorial judgment: Reshaping makes a crafted copy easier to adapt as your intended activity changes. It reduces the pressure to replace a weapon merely because you want a different configuration. However, one adaptable copy is not automatically the best answer for every player. Someone who frequently switches between setups may value having separate copies ready.

Choose around the way you actually organize your loadouts, rather than treating minimum inventory size as the only goal. Also keep ordinary crafting separate from the historical exploit discussed in our Craftening explanation; that incident is not an instruction for normal reshaping.
