Minecraft Far Lands vs World Border: Why Walking Farther Is Not Enough
The classic Far Lands depend on old terrain generation. A modern Java world border is a separate system: check version and dimension before planning a journey.
Will walking farther reveal the classic Far Lands?
Not in an ordinary modern Java world using its normal terrain generator. The classic Far Lands are associated with older terrain generation, while the modern world border is a separate, configurable boundary. Distance alone does not make these two things equivalent.

Why the old expedition uses Beta 1.7.3
The Far Lands or Bust FAQ explains that the expedition stayed on Beta 1.7.3 because the terrain-generation change in Beta 1.8 removed its destination from newly generated terrain. That version choice is central to the journey, not an incidental preference for an older interface. [1]
A video of the old landscape therefore cannot tell you what will generate at the same location in a different release. The edition, version and any modifications belong alongside the coordinates when describing a destination.
What the Java world border changes
A configurable border defines a boundary; it does not recreate the historical terrain glitch. Mojang's Java Edition 1.21.9 notes also specify that the border became dimension-specific, allowing each dimension its own size and position. Keep that version detail in mind when comparing server instructions. [2]
| Question | Classic Far Lands | Modern Java border |
|---|---|---|
| What are you looking at? | Old, abnormal terrain generation | A configured world boundary |
| What should you verify? | Edition, old version and generator | Version, dimension and server settings |
| Does more walking recreate the other? | No: these are different systems | |
What to check before a long-distance trip
Check the version in your launcher and establish whether the reference footage uses Java, another edition or a modified game. For a server, check its published rules or ask its operator about boundaries. Do not assume you have permission to change world settings, or that a border in one dimension explains every other dimension.
Our view: the version is part of the destination
Editorial judgment: The appeal of the Far Lands is not simply a large number on a coordinate display. It is the strange landscape waiting at the end. Planning a journey without checking the generator risks pursuing the distance while missing the actual objective. Our KurtJMac journey article covers the expedition itself; this guide explains why its route cannot be transferred blindly to a modern world.
