Short answer

GameSpot reported on March 9, 2020, that Capcom had patched Switch save corruption and ranged-weapon upgrades failing to apply in Free Style mode. Install available updates; that report does not guarantee recovery of every already affected save.

Scope: Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition on Nintendo Switch, launch-period Free Style reports. An exact patch number was not verified.

The priority is the update, not repeating the trigger

Steven T. Wright’s report says the patch addressed two issues: data corruption and ranged-weapon upgrades not applying in the Switch-exclusive mode. Those are the actionable findings. They do not establish that every weapon-loss symptom has the same cause or that a damaged file is automatically rebuilt on load.

The sequence reported at launch

GameSpot attributes the progression failure to a Reddit report, rather than presenting a developer code explanation.

  1. Play several missions in the optional Vergil campaign.
  2. Attempt to play a Dante Free Style file.
  3. Dante appears in a T-pose and the player cannot progress.

The report does not justify adding a precise internal save-file structure failure, or saying that every transition between characters triggers it.

Protect the remaining progress

Check for a software update from the Switch menu before another session. Nintendo’s product page lists Save Data Cloud support, with the required membership, but first establish what any existing backup contains before replacing it. A backup made after a failure is not necessarily an earlier healthy state.

Keep repair claims narrower than the patch

The source does not verify a final patch number or promise that loading the update returns all missing weapons. A player’s suggestion to collect Beowulf in Mission 14 is not a universal recovery procedure. Likewise, the ranged-upgrade fix does not prove that previously spent currency is refunded. Record the file’s actual behavior after updating instead of assuming that the word fixed settles every consequence.
