Why Can Vanish and Doom Kill Death-Immune Enemies in SNES FF6?

The sequence can bypass an intended death immunity, but enemies that reject Vanish stop it at the first spell.

Short answer

RPG Legion’s Vanish/Doom patch documentation describes instant-death spells killing vanished enemies that would normally resist them in SNES Final Fantasy VI. Vanish must work first. The author’s community patch restores normal spell handling rather than updating original cartridges automatically.

Scope: The original SNES Final Fantasy VI behavior documented by the community patch author; not a claim about every later port.

Two spells can replace a longer damage fight

The sequence begins by making the enemy vanish. A death spell follows. RPG Legion describes the resulting kill even on enemies intended to be immune to instant death, including many bosses.

The first spell is a condition, not a decoration. An enemy immune to Vanish does not enter the state this sequence needs. That is why “cast Doom on any boss” would be the wrong instruction.

The order is the useful part

The documented interaction requires the vanished state before the death spell. A death spell used alone does not establish that the immunity has been bypassed. Nor does this account prove a particular internal check order; the patch author’s visible behavior description is enough to explain the sequence.

  1. Cast Vanish on a target that can receive it.
  2. Once the vanished state is active, use Doom or the documented instant-death spell.
  3. In the affected original behavior, the death effect can succeed despite the target’s intended immunity.

A community fix changed the outcome

RPG Legion publishes a Vanish/Doom fix with an explanation and the bytes it changes. The author says it makes the spells hit normally. That is a separate, modified version of the program. Patchlo has not tested it, and it is not evidence that an untouched cartridge or every later release received the same repair.
