Short answer

Metal Gear Solid 4 deliberately opens with fictional television broadcasts, including live-action material and PMC advertising. The creators described five simultaneous channels and an unprompted channel-change control; seeing that sequence alone does not mean a scratched disc has malfunctioned.

Scope: The intended PS3 opening discussed in Game Informer’s 2014 creator interview. This does not diagnose a specific disc or a frozen video.

The missing instruction was deliberate

The player question describes a scratched copy and an unexpected opening, making it reasonable to ask whether the footage belongs to the game. In Ben Hanson’s interview, the production team explains that the broadcasts portray television in the game’s fictional 2014 setting.

The interview includes Kenichiro Imaizumi, Tylevich and Ryan Payton. Payton wanted an on-screen prompt explaining the channel control; Kojima wanted players to discover it without that instruction. The absence of a visible prompt was therefore a design choice, not evidence that a menu had failed.

What the opening asks the player to do

The sequence begins with a new game and presents a selected broadcast. A button changes channels, but the interview does not justify naming an unverified controller key here.

  1. Start a new game and observe the fictional broadcast.
  2. Try the channel-change control during the opening rather than assuming the first programme is the only video.
  3. Distinguish a changing broadcast from playback that has actually stopped responding.

What this explains—and what it does not

Recognizing the intended footage can prevent an unnecessary reinstall or an abandoned playthrough. It cannot certify that a scratched disc is healthy. If video freezes or the game fails to read later data, the normal existence of the opening does not diagnose that separate fault. The checked interview also does not establish a complete patch history for the sequence.
