Why Can Freezing After Hyper Beam Trap a Pokémon in Recharge?

Freeze can interrupt the expected transition into Hyper Beam’s recharge turn.

Short answer

Bulbapedia records a recharge lock if a Pokémon is frozen after Hyper Beam but before its recharge turn. The affected Pokémon cannot choose a move or switch out. The account includes fainting or a Fire-move thaw as exits, so calling it permanent in every case is inaccurate.

Scope: Original Game Boy Red and Blue; community-documented behavior.

The order creates the problem

This is not merely any frozen Pokémon. Hyper Beam comes first, then freeze before the following recharge turn. The player reaches the next turn unable to select another move or switch to a replacement.

  1. Use Hyper Beam.
  2. The user becomes frozen before the next recharge turn.
  3. On the following turn, both move selection and switching remain blocked.

Haze is not equivalent to the documented Fire thaw

The community account warns that thawing through the opponent’s Haze can leave the recharge problem behind. A Fire move afterward does not clear that remaining condition. Removing a visible status and restoring control are therefore different outcomes in this case.

Later handling does not rewrite an old cartridge

The source records the interaction as fixed in the Stadium games. This article concerns the Game Boy behavior and does not claim a modern cartridge update. It also does not diagnose an exact corrupted flag: the documented sequence and the resulting loss of control establish the issue without that extra claim.
