Why Does Recover Fail When Exactly 255 HP Is Missing in Pokémon Red and Blue?

A damaged Pokémon can fail a healing move at a specific HP gap.

Short answer

Glitch City Wiki’s recovery research documents Recover, Rest and Softboiled failing when the Pokémon is missing exactly 255 or 511 HP. The gap between current and maximum HP matters—not whether the current HP display happens to say 255.

Scope: Original Game Boy Red and Blue; community-documented behavior.

Subtract current HP from maximum HP

A Pokémon at 192 out of 703 HP is missing 511 HP. Glitch City Wiki uses that example to show Softboiled failing. A player can spend the turn selecting a healing move and receive no restored HP, despite plainly not being at full health.

  1. Read the current and maximum HP.
  2. Subtract current HP from maximum HP.
  3. Check whether the missing amount is 255 or 511 before relying on the recovery move.

The failure is in the full-health comparison

The research traces the behavior to the healing check’s treatment of the two-byte HP values. Its carry handling produces gaps of 256 times an integer, minus one. It is misleading to simplify that into “the current HP must be 255” or “any low health causes Recover to miss.”

A different release has different behavior

Glitch City Wiki records the bug as fixed in Pokémon Stadium. The Game Boy cartridge remains a separate program. This numerical check explains the specific failure; it does not establish that every unsuccessful healing attempt in another Pokémon game has the same cause.
