Short answer

Bethesda’s Skyrim 1.2 notes list a fix for an occasional wedding guest arriving dead. That is the documented historical correction; a failed wedding on a later build is not automatically the same bug.

Scope: Original Skyrim’s 2011 wedding issue and patch 1.2. Other marriage failures, mods and later editions require separate checks.

The symptom was a body at the ceremony

UESP records the marriage sequence and the problem of a dead follower appearing at the Temple of Mara. Instead of completing the ceremony, guests could react to the corpse and the wedding could fail. This is a specific event, rather than a label for every marriage quest that stops progressing.

The official 1.2 notes address the occasional dead wedding guest. They do not provide the code-level cause, and this article does not turn a wiki’s observed sequence into an official script diagnosis.

Where the patch fits in the timeline

Patch 1.2 rolled out across platforms in late November 2011. The localized Steam archive used here is dated December 1; that page date should not be mistaken for one worldwide release moment. The wedding entry is a fix note, not evidence that every already-failed ceremony in every saved game was repaired.

Check the build and the actual failure

For an original unpatched installation, the 1.2 correction is directly relevant. For a later edition, identify whether there is actually a dead guest, a missed appointment, a different quest state or a mod interaction before applying old advice.

  1. Record the edition and installed version.
  2. Keep a save from before the ceremony if one is available.
  3. Compare the symptom with the dead-guest report rather than assuming every wedding failure shares its cause.

The old rescheduling advice has limits

UESP discusses leaving and rescheduling through Maramal and the intended spouse in historical failure cases. That is not a promise that apologizing will repair every saved quest state. A retry can cost another trip and another ceremony; deleting a character is not established as necessary by the checked records.
