Stardew Valley / MECHANICS EXPLAINED
Stardew Valley Lava Eel Pond Needs Basalt: What to Do Next
Find the right geodes for a Lava Eel pond request, save a backup with a Crystalarium, and avoid confusing possible quest rewards with interchangeable items.
Where do you get Basalt?
Look for Basalt inside Magma Geodes or Omni Geodes. A Lava Eel pond may request one Basalt when increasing its capacity from three fish to five. If that is the request displayed by your pond, focus on that material rather than opening unrelated geode types. [1]
Scope: Stardew Valley 1.6.x: Lava Eel pond population requests and mineral acquisition. The image supplies pond context, not evidence of a Basalt request.

A practical recovery plan
1. Read the pond's actual request. The possible requests at this stage include Basalt, Diamonds or Dwarf Scroll III; the list is not permission to substitute whichever item you own. [2]
2. Check storage before spending another mining trip. Keep the relevant geodes together so you know what you are opening. [1]
3. Once you obtain Basalt, consider making a backup in a Crystalarium before handing away your only copy. The machine duplicates geode minerals, including Basalt. It still needs a starting specimen; it cannot solve the first-find problem. [3]
Keep or spend the first piece?
Our recommendation: if several pond projects are planned and a Crystalarium is available, securing a duplicate reduces the chance of facing the same search again. If unlocking this one pond matters more than future convenience, using the specimen immediately is a reasonable trade-off. Neither choice requires a promised number of geodes or an invented guaranteed drop.
Quick comparison
No Basalt owned: search the relevant geodes.
One Basalt and a Crystalarium: choose between immediate progress and a backup.
A different pond request: follow that request instead of farming Basalt unnecessarily.
FAQ
Can a Crystalarium create Basalt from nothing? No. It duplicates an inserted mineral. [3]
Does every Lava Eel pond ask for Basalt? No. It is one possible request at this capacity step. [2]
