How to Get Seaweed for Fish Ponds in Stardew Valley

Short on Seaweed for a new fish pond? Compare ocean fishing, beach forage and existing pond outputs, and keep Seaweed separate from Green Algae.

The short answer

Fish in the ocean for Seaweed, or check the appropriate Beach forage area. Seaweed is available across seasons. Crab Pots do not catch it directly. A new Fish Pond requires five Seaweed and five Green Algae as separate materials, alongside 200 Stone and 5,000g. [1]

Scope: Stardew Valley 1.6.x: Seaweed for Fish Pond construction. Beach fishing conditions and pond-produced Seaweed are distinct methods.

Choose a route that fits your save

Need your first pond: start with ocean fishing. A pond-based supply cannot help if you have not yet built the first pond.

Already own a suitable pond: saltwater crab-pot species such as Crab or Lobster can produce Seaweed when kept in a Fish Pond. This is different from placing a Crab Pot in the ocean. [1]

Already visiting the Beach: check the narrow shoreline near the eastern tide pools, but do not make a rare forage spawn your only plan. [1]

A seasonal option, not a universal trick

The Wiki describes using a Training Rod at the Beach on sunny summer days to limit the available catch pool. Keep those conditions attached to the advice; “use a Training Rod anywhere” is not the same method. [1]

Our planning recommendation

Reserve building materials before selling or cooking surplus items. Two planned ponds mean reserving ten Seaweed and ten Green Algae; three mean fifteen of each. These are construction totals, not a prediction of how long fishing will take. [2]

Seaweed versus Green Algae

Seaweed: use the ocean route described above.

Green Algae: a separate item with freshwater fishing among its sources. It cannot fill the Seaweed requirement. [2][3]

FAQ

Can I stock a pond with Seaweed to grow more? No. Stock suitable fish, not Seaweed. [1]

Can White Algae replace Green Algae in construction? No. Follow the named materials in Robin's building requirements. [2]
