How Can Mega Man’s Magnet Beam Pass Through a Wall?

The beam’s endpoint check permits a placement that a full-length collision test would reject.

Short answer

TASVideos documents Mega Man checking the Magnet Beam’s last segment against a wall. Grow the beam in open space, then turn toward the wall when its end would reach beyond the far edge. That can place the beam through a wall instead of stopping it inside the obstruction.

Scope: Original NES Mega Man behavior documented by TASVideos; later collections require a separate check.

The endpoint needs clear space

Simply firing a short beam into a wall is not the documented trick. Its final segment must end beyond the wall, in clear space. TASVideos’ example uses this to place a platform in a narrow passage where the usual setup will not fit.

  1. Grow the beam somewhere unobstructed, often by facing away from the wall.
  2. Wait until its length would put the last segment beyond the wall’s far edge.
  3. Face toward the wall to place the beam through the obstruction.

Turning is part of the sequence

The action changes where the beam lies after it has room to grow. The useful result is a platform placement that the passage otherwise prevents, not a general command to walk through any wall.

The source is tool-assisted research

TASVideos documents the original NES game and warns that many techniques on the page need precise positioning or emulator frame advance. This is an explanation of the recorded placement, not a claim that Patchlo reproduced it or that every later collection behaves identically.
