Why Can Space Station Silicon Valley Freeze with an Expansion Pak?

The original US release and the later revision do not have the same bug list. Neither should be confused with the missing trophy.

Short answer

The Space Station Silicon Valley decompilation project lists the Expansion Pak crash as a version 1.0 bug. Its later revision is not listed as affected. The separate Fat Bear Mountain trophy problem appears under bugs found in all versions. [1]

Scope: Original Nintendo 64 releases, with particular attention to initial US 1.0 versus the later US revision. Recompilations, replacement hardware and emulator settings need separate checking.

The extra memory changes which bug you meet

An Expansion Pak normally stays inside the N64 once installed. That makes this failure confusing: a game that started before can freeze after the console’s memory configuration changes. The published version comparison identifies the Expansion Pak crash under 1.0, rather than calling every cartridge broken. [1]

The project’s short bug list does not explain the exact faulty allocation or name the developer who fixed it. Those details should not be added just because “memory bug” sounds plausible.

Why one player’s cartridge may work

A later revision and an initial release can look like the same purchase on a shelf. Testing one without noting the revision does not settle what happens in the other. The hardware configuration also belongs in the report: an original N64, a modern replacement and a PC recompilation are not interchangeable tests.

For an owner investigating the historical crash, the first useful information is therefore the cartridge revision and whether the Expansion Pak is installed. A working later copy does not disprove the 1.0 report. A crash somewhere else does not automatically prove this particular bug caused it.
