Short answer

Michael Stum’s reverse engineering explains why Altered Beast on PC Engine CD can stop scrolling after transformation with a newer System Card. Music and movement continue, but the game fails to release the condition needed to load more of the level.

Scope: PC Engine CD-ROM² Altered Beast and the System Card 1.0 versus 2.0 behavior analyzed by Michael Stum. Not the Genesis version.

The screen stops while the game keeps responding

Stum’s July 2025 question described reaching the end of the first section in beast form and being unable to advance. The character could still move and the music still played. That separates the symptom from a complete console freeze.

His May 2026 answer traced the problem to a value left behind by the CD-reading BIOS call. The game uses that value without first putting it into the state its transformation code expects.

The sequence behind the blocked route

The actions are ordinary progression, rather than a player attempting an unusual exploit.

  1. Collect the power-ups and transform into a beast.
  2. The game reads more data from the CD.
  3. With the differing System Card behavior, the transformation path updates the wrong flag.
  4. The level-loading check keeps waiting, leaving the route unable to scroll onward.

Why the newer card matters

Stum reports that the relevant X register ends at zero after the 1.0 call and one after the 2.0 call. The beast path therefore changes the neighboring address rather than clearing the flag the main loop checks. He notes that the BIOS documentation did not guarantee the register’s value.

System Card 1.0 avoids this particular mismatch. Extra RAM is not an adequate explanation, because the problem also occurs with 2.0, which lacks the extra RAM of the Super System Card. The checked research does not establish an official corrected disc revision.
