How Can Mega Man Grab a Bottom Ladder From the Top of the Screen?

The bottom ladder can be reached from the opposite screen edge under specific room conditions.

Short answer

TASVideos documents the original Mega Man accessing a ladder at the screen bottom while positioned at the screen top. Holding up can grab it, but the room must have an up exit. A down exit is not required. This is a particular screen-wrap interaction, not any ladder reached from anywhere.

Scope: Original NES Mega Man behavior documented by TASVideos; later collections require a separate check.

First check the room’s exits

The room’s up exit is a required condition in the research. Seeing a ladder drawn at the bottom is not enough to establish the trick on its own. The source does not require a down exit.

  1. Use a room with an up exit and a ladder at its bottom.
  2. Reach the relevant position at the top of the screen.
  3. Hold up to grab the ladder across the screen boundary.

Positioning is the hard part

The sequence describes what happens once Mega Man can reach that upper position. It does not supply a universal route to the top of every room. Related beam and collision techniques are documented separately, with positioning requirements of their own.

Mega Man 2 handles the upper edge differently

The same TASVideos resource explicitly distinguishes Mega Man 2 and the Sega Genesis version of Mega Man 1, stating that they do not have this vertical wrapping. Their upper-edge behavior should not be substituted for the original NES case. The demonstrations are tool-assisted research, with no claim of a fresh Patchlo reproduction.
