Short answer

ComboVid documents a Street Fighter II car-bonus glitch that can trap a fighter in the air. Another player can knock the fighter free, but if the countdown expires while the fighter remains stuck, the session can stop progressing.

Scope: The arcade car-bonus behavior described in error1’s 2010 handbook. Exact affected board revisions are not specified in that account.

A bonus round that would not finish

In the September 26, 2010 handbook, error1 describes damaging one side of the car until it produces red hit sparks, then hitting a narrow spot with a backward-jumping attack. The fighter can remain suspended instead of landing.

The article gives Ryu and Ken’s heavy kick and E. Honda’s medium kick as examples. It also warns that the target area is small. A failed attempt to reproduce the bug does not prove that a board revision is unaffected.

The recorded action chain

This is a car-stage collision problem, distinct from Guile’s better-known handcuffs behavior.

  1. Break a side of the car until the red-spark damage state appears.
  2. Jump backward and attack the small collision spot.
  3. If the fighter becomes stuck, a second player may strike them free.
  4. If time expires while the fighter remains suspended, the normal end of the round can fail.

The cost and the missing patch history

The immediate cost is a stopped arcade session and potentially a reset, not a corrupted save file. A second player’s intervention matters because there is a window before the countdown ends.

The handbook documents behavior, not Capcom’s internal diagnosis. It does not identify a final corrected revision, so this history should not be expanded into a claim that every later release retains the bug.
