Street Fighter II’s Red Fireball Was Not a Stronger Hadouken
The rare red Hadouken in CPS-1 Street Fighter II behaves like the ordinary fireball.
Short answer
The rare red Hadouken in CPS-1 Street Fighter II behaves like the ordinary fireball. ComboVid documented the unchanged properties; a later report of Akira Nishitani’s developer interview identified the color variation as an intentional Easter egg.
Scope: The rare cosmetic CPS-1 fireball, not Ryu’s later distinct Shakunetsu Hadouken special move.

The color changed before the explanation did
In error1’s 2010 handbook, the projectile is described as functionally identical to a normal Hadouken except for its color. The article was unsure whether the variation was deliberate. That uncertainty was part of the contemporary record.
Jon Catalyst Grey’s March 7, 2018 EventHubs report later covered an Akira Nishitani interview translated by Shmuplations. It described the rare red fireballs as an intentional addition rather than an accidental palette error.
What the player actually does
There is no separate command required for this cosmetic variation.
- Throw an ordinary Hadouken with Ryu or Ken.
- On a rare occurrence, the projectile appears red or orange instead of blue.
- Its different appearance does not make that original projectile a stronger special move.
How the rumor differs from the later move
The later Shakunetsu Hadouken is a distinct move, which is why remembering a red projectile across different Street Fighter releases can produce conflicting accounts. The cosmetic event and the later attack should not share one damage explanation.
No unsupported appearance odds or secret input recipe is needed to tell this history. It is a case where a player-visible oddity acquired a clearer developer account years after community documentation had preserved the observation.
