Super Metroid’s X-Ray Scope Misses This Lower Norfair Exit
The Super Metroid speedrunning wiki records a false wall near the top of Lower Norfair’s Fireflea Room that looks solid under X-Ray.
Short answer
The Super Metroid speedrunning wiki records a false wall near the top of Lower Norfair’s Fireflea Room that looks solid under X-Ray. Samus can pass through it. The scanner’s display does not establish that the exit is blocked.
Scope: The original Super Metroid room documented by the speedrunning community. The development-history explanation remains speculation.

An exit the scanner does not reveal
The room contains the large stone face, falling boulders and Firefleas that make the location recognizable. Near its top, a false wall provides an exit even though X-Ray presents it as ordinary solid terrain.
The wiki describes players trusting that scan and returning toward the Lower Norfair elevator instead, taking a route through the acid in Amphitheatre. The cost is an unnecessary return route and exposure to that hazard, not an erased save.
The route check
A scan can be misleading here, so the relevant check is whether Samus can move through the passage.
- Climb to the upper part of the Fireflea Room.
- Locate the false-wall exit rather than treating the X-Ray image as conclusive.
- Move through the apparent wall to continue out of the area.
Observation versus development theory
The wiki separately records a community theory: perhaps the wall was transparent during earlier testing and the Fireflea lighting effect was added later. That proposed sequence is not a developer-confirmed production history.
The reliable distinction is between the observed result and its suggested explanation. The wall can be crossed; X-Ray fails to reveal it. The checked record does not identify a final official patch version for this behavior.
